Welcome to the home of beautiful, handcrafted, bespoke, Lakeland Slate House Signs and Numbers. We are a new venture sprung from our sister company Lakeland Slate. Our aim is to specialise in providing the highest quality product which you can be proud to adorn your home.
All About Slate
Let's start with material, Lakeland Slate, also known as Westmorland Green Slate, was formed 450 million years ago, is metamorphosised volcanic ash and takes its unique green colour from the mineral chlorite. It is made up of many compressed layers which add to its overall strength and increases its durability to the elements, making it a superior product to any cheaper imported material. Slate is a natural stone which comes in many colour variations & can include natural markings. Throughout the UK slate is used for roofing, walling, paving and much more.
Because we work closely with a local stone yard, we are able to source clogs of slate collected straight from the quarry face, which are then split and cut in the workshop before polishing and engraving. This allows us to produce a high end product for a competitive price.

Now the Engraving
We have been engraving slate in the workshop for many years, firstly everthing was done by hand, a highly skilled operation though very time consuming.
Next came the revolution of the 'incimar' machine. A table set up with a router cutter which worked along stencils to v cut into the slate after which the letters would be painted. A satisfactory process but limited to stencil type.
Now in the worskhop we have the latest technology, a CNC Router Engraver which allows us access to many fonts and designs, allowing us to create exactly what you require.
Although hi-tech equiment it still uses the same cutting tool that was on the old stencil machine and before that, done by hand. All this to produce v-cut letters with accuracy and precision. There is no sand blasting or laser etching here!!
Who are Lakeland Slate Signs?
We are a small, local firm who make quality house signs and numbers from our world famous 'green slate'. We provide signs and numbers that we are passionate and proud of, ensuring attention to detail. Based in the beautiful Lake District, Keswick on Derwentwater, we are able to source slate from several local quarries: Coniston, Kirkstone and Elterwater at Langdale.
We have a small shop situated in the town centre of Keswick and you will find us selling on the market, Thursdays and Saturdays.

House Signs and Numbers
All of our signs and numbers are made with our famous Lakeland Slate. The letters and numbers are engraved into the slate, then are twice painted using enamel paint before being polished and sealed with a weatherproof sealer which helps protect and enhance the colour of the slate.
Personalised Options - House Signs
For each sign we create, we offer a number of options including:
- Straight or Rustic Edge
- Letter Size
- Enamel Paint - White, Black, Gold or Silver
- Upper and/or Lower Case Lettering
- An extensive choice of Fonts
- A border can be added
- A simple image can be incorporated into your sign
Our signs come in a range of sizes up to 600mm and are at least 12mm thick. They come predrilled with the fixings, including chrome coloured screw covers.

For each sign we create, we offer a number of options including:
- Straight Edge - 150mm x 110mm approximately
- Rustic Edge - 150mm x 150mm approximately
- Enamel Paint - White, Black, Gold or Silver
- Can also include a letter e.g. 1A or 1b
They come predrilled with the fixings, including chrome coloured screw covers.
